How To Make Money From Blog

I’m often asked how to make money blogging so want in this article to lay out some basic steps that I see most bloggers who make a living from blogging go through.
Here is how to make money from a blog:
  1. Set up your blog
  2. Start creating useful content
  3. Get off your blog and start finding readers
  4. Build engagement with the readers that come
  5. Start making money from the readership you have through one or more of a variety of income streams
Sounds easy doesn’t it! On some levels the process is simple – but you need to know up front that there’s a lot to each step and below I’m going to give you some pointers on each including some further reading.
Here’s how to make money from a blog.

1. Start a Blog

In order to make money blogging you’re going to need to have a blog. While this is pretty obvious it is also a stumbling block for many PreBloggers who come to the idea of blogging with little or no technical background.
If that’s you – don’t worry! It was my story too and most bloggers start out feeling a little overwhelmed by the process of starting their blog.
If you need a little help I would highly recommend you check out my article How to Start a Blog in which I run through the steps you need to take to get up and running. It’s really not as hard as you might think!

2. Start Creating Useful Content

A blog is not a blog without content so once you’ve set your blog up you need to focus your attention upon creating useful content. What you choose to create will depend a little on the topic that you choose to write about (on that note, most successful bloggers have some focus to their blogging whether that be a niche or a demographic that they write for).
The key with creating content is to make it as useful as possible. Focus upon creating content that changes people’s lives in some way will be the type of content that people will value the most and it will help people to feel like they know, like and trust you – which is really important if you later want to make money from your blog.

3. Get off your blog and start finding readers

As you create the most useful content that you possibly can it is easy to get very insular with your focus and spend most of your time looking at building your blog. Many bloggers have a ‘build it and they will come mentality’ with their blogging but this is a bit of a trap.
If you want to make money from your blog you need to not only focus upon building a great blog but it is also necessary to get off your blog and to start promoting it.
There are many ways to experiment with growing your blog’s audience that I’ve written in previous blog posts and talked about in podcasts (I’ll share some further reading and listening below) but it is important to enter into all these strategies remembering that you should not just be looking for ‘traffic’ but ‘readers’.
Start by thinking carefully about the type of reader you’d like to have read your blog. You might like to create an avatar of that reader (sometimes called a reader persona or profile) to help you work out who you’re trying to attract.
Once you know who you’re hoping to have read your blog ask yourself where that type of person might already be gathering online. Begin to list where they might be gathering:
  • Are they reading certain blogs? List the top 3
  • Are they participating in certain forums? List the top 3
  • Are they listening to podcasts? List the top 3
  • Are they engaging on certain social networks? List the top 3
  • Which accounts are they following on each of these social networks? List the top 3
Each of these places that you reader might already be gathering has opportunities to develop a presence whether that be by leaving good comments, offering to create guest posts or simply by being helpful and answering questions.
With this list of blogs, focus, podcasts, social media accounts in hand you will have some good spots to begin to hang out and create value.
The key is to build a presence, to add value, to foster relationships – not to engage in spammy practices.

4. Build engagement with the readers that come

With sustained focus upon creating great content and finding readers for your blog you’ll begin to notice people visiting your blog and engaging with your content.
At this point you need to switch your focus to engaging with those readers and building community.
Respond to comments, reach out to those readers personally and do everything that you can to keep them coming back again and again by building a ‘sticky blog’.
Look after the readers you already have well and you’ll find they spread the word of your blog for you and help make your blog even more widely read.
Having an engaged reader is also much easier to make money from.

5. Start making money from the readership you have through one or more of a variety of income streams

OK – the first four steps of starting a blog, creating content, finding readers and building engagement with those readers are important foundations that you really do need to get in place before you’ll be able to build long term income for your blog.
There’s no avoiding that what we’ve covered is a lot of work but if you do it well you’ll be setting yourself up well and giving yourself every chance of being able to make money from your blog.
With these foundations in place you’re now ready to start attempting to make money from your blog but you do need to be aware that just because you have set up your blog, have content and have engaged readers that the money won’t just automatically flow.
It takes continued work and experimentation to make money from your blog.

There are Many Ways to Make Money Blogging

One of the biggest misconceptions that I see bloggers having about monetising blogs is that they have to do it in one of a handful of ways. The reality is that there are many ways to make money from blogs.
A few years ago I decided to sit down and list all the ways that I saw bloggers making money from their blogs and created this ‘money map’ (click to enlarge).

As you’ll see there are quite a few options that bloggers have to derive income from their blogs.
Don’t worry though – while this map is quite overwhelming at a first glance there are a few main ‘clusters’ of income streams that you might want to focus upon rather than all the specific ones.

1. Advertising Income

This is where many bloggers start. In many ways this model of making money from blogs is not dissimilar to how a magazine or newspaper sells ads. As your traffic and brand grows you’ll find advertisers will be willing to pay to get exposure to your audience.
While you need decent traffic to do a direct deal with an advertisers there are ad networks (like Google AdSense) that act as a middleman and enable smaller publishers to run ads on their blogs. This is where many bloggers start (I did too).

2. Affiliate Income

A recent survey of ProBlogger readers found that affiliate promotions was the most common type of income that our readers have.
To put it most simply – affiliate income is when you link to a product that is for sale on another site (take Amazon for example) and if someone follows your link and ends up buying that product you earn a commission on that sale.
There’s more to it than that but this is another great place to start with monetising your blog as affiliate programs are easy to sign up for and if you have an engaged audience you will find they follow the recommendations that you make on products.

3. Products

While I started out making money from my blogs through advertising and affiliate promotions today my #1 source of income is through selling eBooks and courses on my blogs. These ‘virtual products’ take work to create but have been lucrative for me and many other bloggers.
Products can of course take many forms and income virtual information products like eBooks or courses but also other virtual products like software, reports etc.
The other type of product some bloggers sell is physical products. This is most common when the blogger has a business but sometimes bloggers also create merchandise (T-shirts etc) or other physical products to sell.

4. Continuity Programs

A continuity program is when you set up some kind of subscription for readers to buy that gets them access to something exclusive. A reader pays you a monthly or annual fee for access to some combination of:
      • exclusive content
      • community area/forum
      • coaching/mentoring/mastermind group
      • other benefits like access to products, services, software

5. Services

The last main way that I see bloggers making money from their blogs today is through selling their own services in some way.
The first time this happened to me was on one of my blog giststudents.com where many years ago a reader asked if I would do a coaching call with them. While I no longer offer this service it opened my eyes to new ways of making money from my blog.
I know of many bloggers who offer coaching, consulting and mentoring services but others who offer a wide variety of freelance services from web design, to social media management, to book keeping, to speaking, to event management etc.
The key is to use your blog to highlight your expertise to the point that people want to hire you as a result of what they see that you know and can do.

Multiple Income Streams

Most full time bloggers make money more than one way and end up with multiple income streams.
Diversifying your income in this way not only is smart and helps you spread the risk from having all your eggs in one basket but it also speeds up the journey to going full time.

Let’s Share the Journey to Make Money from Your Blog

I hope that this article has helped you on your journey to make money from a blog.

1.  Navigate to your blog dashboard

To create a new blog post, navigate to your blog dashboard (Content > Blog).

2.  Select blog

If you have multiple blogs, you will need to toggle to the blog in which you would like to author the new post. If you do not have multiple blogs, you can skip to the next step.
Select blog

3.  Create post

Click Write new blog post to create a new blog post.
HubSpot Help article screenshot
Select post type
Next choose whether you want to start with a blank post or a post blueprint.
Post blueprints include default content to give you ideas about how to structure typical posts. Post blueprints give you a starting post structure to modify to suit your needs. The three blueprints include:
  • how-to-post
  • list post
  • visual post

4.  Name the post

To edit the name of your post, mouse over ad click on the title. You will see a pencil overlay appear on editable areas of your post.

5.  Draft the post content

HubSpot Help article screenshot
Now that you have created and named your post you are ready to begin drafting your content.
To begin editing content, hover over and click the post body area of the editor. This action will reveal a formatting menu.
Use this menu to add text, relevant images, and CTA buttons to draft your post. You can learn more about using the rich text editor interface.

Best practices

  • Create an article that is greater than 600 words. Each post you write doesn't have to be a novel.
  • Use headings and paragraph breaks to break up large chunks of text.
  • Creating content interesting to your audience. When writing your article, your only concern should be the content in the article. Don’t get distracted by adding keywords, links, images, calls-to-action or anything else marketing-related.
  • Write posts people will want to link to. The more people that link to your blog entry, the more likely it is Google will rank it. Be interesting, useful, and educational in your blog posts.
  • Don't be self-promotional. A blog entry that's nothing more than an ad for your company isn't interesting or useful to your audience. Write entries YOU would want to forward to coworkers, friends, or family members if you were a reader.
  • Think like a teacher. A good approach to building useful content is to try to teach your audience something. You know more about your industry than anyone; what can you teach your prospects?

While editing content directly on your post preview will yield an accurate rendering of how your post will display, there may be times where you want to focus purely on the drafting content, without any other distractions.
Zen Mode allows you to toggle into an editor that hides other areas of the post editor, so that you can work on the content.
To toggle to this view, click the Zen Mode button in the upper right-hand corner of the post body editor. Once you are finished authoring your content, you can switch back to the regular editor to see how your post looks.
Zen Mode Button

Read more separator

By default, HubSpot will show the first paragraph on content as a summary on a listing of your posts. You can control how much content renders on the listing, by using the Read More Separator.
Clicking this option, adds a separator to your post body. All content above this separator will render on the listing layout.

6.  Configure Settings

Once you have drafted your content, you will want to configure the blog settings. Click Settings at the top of the editor.

Settings allows you to edit:
  • The post's URL
  • The post's author
  • The post's topics
  • The post's campaign
  • The post's meta description
  • The post's featured image
You can also add new authors, topics, and campaigns from this screen.
Within the Settings panel, you can set the featured image. Featured images are the image that is used when the post is shared on social media, and will also render on the post listing layout (if the using the standard HubSpot template and enabled in Content Settings).
You can click on one of the images here to choose your featured image or you can click the [ + ] icon, which would let you upload and use a completely different image that isn't in your blog post.

How To Open A Blog

If you’ve ever wondered how to create a blog, you’re in luck because that’s exactly what I’m going to show you today.
20 minutes is all you need, and you DON’T need any knowledge of HTML, coding or graphics design.
I’ll walk you through the whole process in a moment, but first, let me tell you my story…
3 years ago, I didn’t know the slightest thing about making a blog. Greatly excited by the prospect of making a blog of my own, I went ahead to register my first domain name.
Then, I became confused. I didn’t know what to do next. I struggled for 18 days, invested time and energy to understand the new “blog,” checking Google for stuff like “how to start your own blog” without grasping anything.
Everything I  found seemed technical. I got frustrated.
In despair, I abandoned the new domain name for… 6 months.
Then, I went back to it, having eventually learnt that I needed not just a domain name but also a hosting account to open a blog.
So… I started my first blog, and struggled with each step because I had no one to guide me. You can set up a blog in 20 minutes, but it took me 6 months the first time out.
Over the years, I’ve learnt a lot about blogging and I’ve set up many successful blogs for myself and others. I know what best practices to use and the mistakes to avoid.
I want to help you avoid all the pains I endured. Benjamin Franklin said, and true are his words:
Experience is a hard master, but fools will have no other.
So, learn from history, not experience. I’ll tell you how to make a successful blog, so you can forget everything else.
Just follow the simple steps below, and your blog could be ready in 20 minutes.
Please note, if you get stuck while making your blog, please feel free to get in touch by emailing us @ clemaxchurs23@gmail.com and I’ll be glad to help you out for free.

    Steps to making a blog

The Best Guide On How To Start A Blog

STEP 1: Know WHY you want to start a blog

When you know your destination, getting your direction becomes easier, right?
People start blogs for different reasons. Today, blogging is a great way to:
    • Become a better person. Blogging helps you think clearer, communicate with intentionality and build your creative flair.
    • Improve your writing. Writing proficiency comes with regular practice and starting a blog helps you write regularly
    • Make your voice heard. Gone are the days when only powerful politicians and wealthy businessmen could air their views. Now, you, too, can!
    • Make a difference. You want to help people take control of their personal finance? Start your own blog. You wish people would exercise more, take healthier meals and rest better? Start a blog.
    • Get published. The world is changing, and traditional publishers are falling into irrelevance. Smart authors now make a blog, build a loyal audience and publish their works. This approach works always.
    • Make money. It takes time and commitment but people make real money from blogs. I’ve made tens of thousands of dollars myself from blogging. And many folks I’ve taught how to create a blog are doing fine too.

You can start a cool blog for any or all of the above purposes. Just use this simple guide, and you’ll see how easy it is.

STEP 2: Decide WHAT your blog will focus on

People start different classes of blogs.
Travel blogs. Vegetarian blogs. Romance blogs. Writing blogs. Marketing blogs. Political blogs. Religion blogs. Fashion blogs. Photography blogs, Educational blog, Scholarship blog.

So… what type of blog should you start?

What will be the focus or theme of your blog? This theme is called a niche –– and you should have one.
The best is to choose a niche you’re passionate about. Blogging is to be enjoyed. You know, there’s fulfillment in connecting with others and providing helpful information. You’ll experience this joy, and be able to do it for long, if you’re passionate about what you blog about.
When I finally launched my first blog, I found I was really passionate about writing and publishing. So I made that my niche and was able to connect with, learn from and impact many nice people. I even made money from it. I was fulfilled.

    What are your hobbies?

What do you feel happy doing? What are you always excited to talk about to your friends?
Is it fashion, technology, entrepreneurship, leadership, food, traveling, relationship, movies or fiction? That’s probably what you should be blogging about. If you’re passionate about it, you can keep sharing useful information about it.
Create a blog today, and talk about what you love, what you know, and what you’re learning. It’s easy, and you CAN do it.

STEP 3: Decide which of the blogging platforms you’ll use

The question, “How do you start a blog?” has many alternative answers. You can do it on blogging platforms like:
    • Blogger: e.g. solutionkit.blogspot.com
    • Hosted WordPress: e.g. giststudent.wordpress.com
    • Self-Hosted WordPress: e.g. curiousitysolution.com
The first two options are free. But they’re also clumsy and ugly, don’t you think?
If your interest is to start a blog for business, a self-hosted WordPress blog is more professional. If it’s to do it for a cause or as a hobby, a self-hosted WordPress blog is more elegant.

The free blogging platforms aren’t really free.

They come with TONS of annoying limitations that just enslave you. Here’s 5 of them:
Limit #1: if you think the companies allowing you to create a blog on their blogging platforms for free do so because they love you, you’re wrong. They only do so to make money off of you. That’s why they put up adverts on your blog and ask you to pay to enjoy upgrades. Go for a self-hosted blog so you won’t be a wheel in a car working to make another company rich.
Limit #2: you’re not allowed to do affiliate marketing on free blogs. Some of them further prohibit Google Adsense and other cool ways to make money blogging. That’s not how to start a blog rightly.
Limit #3: you can’t use any of the thousands of amazing plugins and themes available to a self-hosted blog. After making a blog, plugins help you extend the functionality of the blog, the same way apps extend the functionality of a phone. Imagine having a phone without being able to install and use apps. Is it cool to live in a house you’re prohibited from painting and designing? If it’s not, then it sucks to have a blog without being able to use a theme on it.
Limit #4: you can’t use a custom email like John@YourFashionGuy.com. That’s not cool. You deserve something better.
Limit #5: on free blogging platforms, your blog can be deleted at anytime if the company’s server mistakes your blog for a spam, or if you accidentally violate their rules. And guess what – you have no remedy if that happens.
So the smart choice is to go with a self-hosted blog.

How much does a self-hosted blog cost?

    Turns out, not much.
What you’ll pay to set up your blog is less than a movie ticket. First, you’ll need a domain name – usually sold for $15 but I’ll tell you how to grab it for FREE.
Second, you’ll need a hosting account which costs less than $72 for the first year.
I’ll show you how easy both steps are in a moment.

STEP 4: Decide which web host to use

In my many years of creating and managing blogs, I’ve learn t from bitter experiences that NOT many web hosts are awesome. I’ve used some big name web hosts in the past, and while they make sweet promises, their services are not really that good.
    • Their servers often had issues and make my sites load slowly and go down too often (this gave me nightmares in day time)
    • Their customer care agents were often too lazy, clueless or too busy with other things to properly offer a help when I needed it
    • They do some aggressive, spammy marketing like installing plugins or placing their links on my websites without my consent
Today, the reliable web host I recommend is Web Hosting Hub.

Why Web Hosting Hub is reliable

#1: they provide 24/7 customer support through chat, phone, or email and in my experience, their customer service reps are helpful, polite and professional.
#2: they guarantee and provide an amazing server uptime of 99.9%. Very few web hosts can match that feat.
#3: they give you a free domain name – some web hosts sell a domain name for $15 per year.
#4: their service is extremely easy to use, and specifically tailored for WordPress blogs. Whether you’re an expert or a non-geek, they’ll make your experience memorable.
#5: they offer unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwidth, and unlimited email accounts.
#6: they’re inexpensive. When you use the discount link on this page, you’ll SAVE some extra money and pay less than $72 for the first year.
Disclosure: I am an affiliate of Web Hosting Hub and if you sign up through any of the links on this page, I may get a little commission (at no extra cost to you). But this didn’t influence my recommendation, because all hosting services have similar programs. I recommend Web Hosting Hub because I have personal experiences with them and honestly believe they offer amazing quality. And, I’ve been able to get a special discount for my readers who use any of the discount links on this page.
#7: they have a “one-click WordPress blog” installation, so you can install WordPress with few clicks.
#8: they offer a 90-day money-back guarantee. So if you start a blog today and decide later that blogging is not something you want to do again, you can cancel your account and get a refund.

Hover the mouse on “Posts” and click “Add New” from the sub-menus that pop out.
    Create a new WordPress post
Add the title of your post in the first tab and the content in the second tab.
    Write a new blog post
    Hit “Publish”.
When the next page loads, click “View post” to see how your new post appears to your readers.
    View your new blog
